During a speech given to the West Alabama Baptist Church today, Sarah Palin was caught on tape addressing inner city issues and claiming that individuals are hopeless and cling to drugs and government to get them through.

“But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there’s not evidence of that in their daily lives,” said Palin.  “You go into some of these big cities in the Northeast, and like a lot of big cities in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to drugs or government or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-anglo sentiment or anti-religion sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

The White House immediately jumped on the former vice presidential candidate’s words as inflammatory and insensitive.  “She is clearly out of touch with inner city individuals,” said a White House spokesperson.  “Claiming that drugs and government are bad things to cling to is absurd.  Most Americans rely on drugs and government in their daily lives.  Inf fact, this country was built on drugs and government.  Our Founding Fathers were drug users and deeply government people.  To make such statements is an insult to this country and to our history.”
